The cliché is true
The eternal spring line isn't marketing: temperatures on the south coast sit between 20 and 27°C for most of the year. You can be in shirtsleeves in January, and August rarely feels oppressive because the trade winds keep things moving.
The house is higher than the coast, which pays off in summer: the nights are cooler and you sleep better than down by the sea.
Month by month
- December to March — 20-23°C. The big draw: sunshine while Europe is cold. The sea is brisk at 19-20°C, but the pool is heated.
- April to June — 22-25°C. Our favourite window. Fine weather, everything green after winter, and fewer people than summer.
- July to September — 25-28°C. Livelier and busier. Book ahead if you're coming in August.
- October and November — 24-26°C and the warmest sea of the year, up to 23°C. For us, the best balance of weather, price and quiet.
The pool, all year
This is where we differ from most places on the island: our infinity pool is heated from 10am to 6pm. By the afternoon the water sits at 26-29°C depending on the season.
It means you can swim comfortably in January — which you can't in the island's unheated pools, where the water drops below 20°C in winter.
Two things nobody mentions
The calima. Several times a year Saharan dust blows in and the sky turns orange and hazy. It usually lasts two or three days. It isn't dangerous, but visibility drops and the temperature climbs. It's unpredictable, so there's no planning around it.
North and south are different islands. It can be raining in La Laguna and blazing here, half an hour away. If you wake up to cloud, don't cancel your plans — switch sides.
Dates to know
Santa Cruz Carnival, in February, is among the largest in the world and it's 20 minutes away. If you like a party, it's an excellent reason to come in winter; if you want quiet, avoid the capital that week.
Easter, August and Christmas are the busiest periods. If you have flexibility, May, June and October give you the same island with fewer people and better rates.
